Well i got my first Triathlon done this year and fel t great. I had a goal set for 1:30 and finished in 1:21, i think i could have done better is i din’t have isues with my back tire on the bike but still overall it was a blast.
Te sim went well, i forgot how much of a “washing machine” it is when you’re fighting for that first bouy with 50 other guys. but I finally got a pace going at th first turn. Sighting was pretty good too.
For the bike, at 3.5 miles in I realized I had a great pace going, my average speed to that point had been 21 mph. at 4.25 miles in I realized my legs felt great. I was feeling awesome about how well I was doing and realizing I was going to crush my projected overall time. at 4.75 miles into the 9mile bike my bike I heard a snap and realized a spoke on my back wheel broke, this warped my tire and eventually slowed my average speed down to 16mph due to the rubbing against the brake pads. but I made the call to keep on riding until the wheel fell off and rode like this for the last 4 miles.
Now, for the run, my legs felt like jelly for he first 3/4 miles. I think this was due to the extra effort to get through the bike due to the spoke issues. at the 1.25 mark I finally found my pace and kept it through the rest of the way. I did not stop to walk once and that was an achievement since at almost every other triathlon i’ve done i had to walk at least a little during the run. I’m very happy about the overall performance and looing forward to the next one which may be earlier than i had previously anticipated.
i’ve been doing more of a bubble gum shuffle at 12 and 13 min/mile paces, it’ not even an “airborn shuffle”. it’s so sad though to think at one point in life i ran a 12:02min 2 mile run – 5:59min for the first mile and 6:03 for the second mile – and now i’m struggling to get under 10min. i’ll get there. my goal is to get to a 10min mile pace for 4 miles by end of May and down to an 8 or 9 min mile pace for 5 miles by Oct.
